Appointment of President

The President of India is the head of state and the first citizen of India. As per the Constitution of India, the President is the supreme commander of the Indian Armed Forces and has the power to appoint the Prime Minister and other members of the Union Council of Ministers, as well as to dismiss them. 

Appointment of the President: The President of India is elected indirectly, by an electoral college, in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. The electoral college consists of

  • The elected Members of both Houses of Parliament (MPs).
  • The elected Members of the Legislative Assemblies of the states (MLAs).
